About Lincoln Square / Ravenswood
Historic Lincoln Square is at the heart of Chicago’s north side, bordered by Foster, Montrose, Damen and the Chicago River. Lincoln Square is a bustling combination of historic architecture, boutique shopping, spacious parks, peaceful residential areas and businesses. Throughout the years, Lincoln Square has been home to immigrants from Eastern Europe, Germany, Greece and Mexico, and these influences are evident in diversity of the neighborhood. Public transportation to Lincoln Park is provided by several CTA Brown Line stops, CTA bus lines and the Metra Union Pacific North line.
Lincoln Square’s abundance of historic buildings represents architectural styles from the Victorian era to the present day. Lincoln Square is the location of Krause Music Store, the last work of Chicago School architect Louis Sullivan. The building is now a museum devoted to the decorative arts. Lincoln Square’s association with the arts goes deeper, as it is the home of The Old Town School of Folk Music and a number of murals and statues representing the European heritage of the neighborhood, as well as its namesake, Abraham Lincoln.
Today, nearly 20% of Lincoln Square has been designated a historic preservation district, keeping it beautiful, family-friendly and easy paced. Because of gentrification efforts over the past 25 years, a number of reasonably priced vintage homes are available in Lincoln Square and Ravenswood. Additionally, bike lanes, recently repaved sidewalks, public squares, parks and its close proximity to public transportation make the neighborhood very pedestrian friendly.
